In 1984 he founded his own software company, Dix & Associates. The company specialized in developing productivity tools for early versions of Windows operating systems.

Among their most popular products were WordPerfect Office (a suite of office applications that included a word processor), PerfectFax (a faxing program), and PerfectCalc (a spreadsheet program). Dix & Associates was acquired by Corel Corporation in 1994 for $265 million dollars. Donald Dix remained with Corel as Vice President and General Manager of their Productivity Applications Group until 1997 when he retired from the software industry altogether.
